I have had it since the beginning of July. Switching from my Palm Treo 700P was a great upgrade. Having real email and being able to receive my .wma attachments and play them has been a huge benefit since my voicemail system sends the message as an audio file attachment.

But I've noticed the phone slowly getting slower and slower and more unstable over time. My storage memory space had been reduced down to just over ten megabytes and I could not find any other way to clear this out. However, I just installed MemMaid and found that the windows/messaging folder had over 40mb of files ending with the .mpb file extension. After some research online, there was not a lot of information but I deduced that these files were left over email that were not deleted when the message was removed. I backed up my outlook files on my pc and then connected the phone w/ activesync. Once connected, I went into file manager and deleted the over 300 .mpb files and now I have over 50mb of space in the Storage Memory. It's quite liberating actually, being able to reclaim this space that was just being wasted for no good reason. One thing is for sure, MS just does not comprehend the concept of lean and mean. MS is definitely the king of bloat. I have not yet done much with MemMaid, but it seems like a great tool and I will probably end up registering it considering that it helped me find over 40mb of crap wasting space on the phone.

Anyway, I wanted to share this in hopes that it may help someone else experiencing the same windows mobile storage memory issues.

Palm just doesn't give a damn about it's customers

That was made very clear today when I tried to contact someone at Palm about the fact that their new forum registration is broken for those who were previously registered to use the palm forums. I completed the first step of the process, confirming my email and my user name. The palm forums, powered by lithium.com, are "new" and in order to use the new palm forums, previous uses have to jump through some hoops to be able to do so.

After receiving the 'welcome' message via email with the link to verify my information, I filled out the remaining fields that were not already pre-populated (my user name and my email address). I put in a new password, checked the boxes to indicate that I'm over 13 years of age and that I agree to the terms of service. I click on "submit" and the form just comes back to itself, the password fields empty and no error messages.

After 24 hours, I decided to call palm. That turned out to be a huge mistake. First of all, no one at palm wants to talk to a palm customer. So they make finding any phone number difficult. Next, they force you through a stupid question and answer session to "get you to the correct department". Only one problem, there is no department for your website is broken. And so, as to be expected, the packi's on the other end have no clue about the palm website and all they can do is say "try it again in three hours". Yea, that was really helpful.

I tried calling corporate relations, I actually spoke to someone for whom English is not a second language. Problem again, they knew nothing about the website and said there is no one they can refer me to resolve this issue. So it seems that some phantom web development team swooped in from out of the blue, put this site online and vanished, never to be seen from again. So what's the friggin' point of having this "support" section if it cannot be used without setting up a brand new account, using a different email address? Now most of you will probably say, "well, why not just do that?" The answer is because I have one main email address that I use and I don't want to have to bounce here and there to read my email messages.

The real problem is that palm really does not really care about its customers. If you're a prospective customer, they'll court you but once you spend the cash, all you'll hear are crickets.

So I guess this is my final wake up call to throw away the palm tx and buy a windows based pda. I like my tx, but not at the expense of being treated like a leper because I'm a customer.

Creating a standalone sitemap

I got the idea from another site I found through one of the webmaster forums I read. It is incredibly annoying to now have to wait for a red light on Olive when the lights are green for cross traffic that does not exist.

I have always felt that the collective intelligence at modot was about equal to an amoeba, and this kind of stupid, ignorant change in the way traffic signals function for no reason other than to inconvenience and irritate those of us that actually have to pass through those intersections on a daily basis, is proof of modot’s lack of intelligence and complete disregard for the motorists.

It always amazes me when I read an article in the paper or hear something on the news about how modot is “surprised” by the fact that most people in Missouri loath your bloated, arrogant, useless organization. From the really stupid design of Manchester Rd from 270 which has been the cause of numerous serious traffic accidents, west to traffic signals that now change to green for ghost traffic, modot is certainly consistently retarded.

Circuit City Sucks

Below is the complaint I sent to Circuit City because of the absolutely lousy service and lack of response from the store manager. For my trouble, they said they are sending a $10 gift card. I haven't seen it yet:

Circuit City Stores, Inc.
Attn: Customer Support
<st1:address st="on"><st1:street st="on">9954 Mayland Dr.</st1:street>
Richmond, VA <st1:postalcode st="on">23233</st1:postalcode></st1:address>

I purchased two products online last night and I drove to the Brentwood location (in St. Louis) to pick them up as well as to buy two SD cards that were on sale.

My ticket numbers are:

37670154xxx
37670154xxx

My experience with this store was underwhelming. First, the stored seemed to be a huge cavern and hardly a sale associate to be found. I did find a female employee in the middle of the store that informed me the SD cards were in cameras. I went to the camera department to find one sales rep behind the counter, talking with a customer. There was no one else around with whom I could inquire as to the location of the memory cards. So I gave up and started searching all of the racks near the cameras. I finally found what I was looking for and not once did anyone ask if I needed assistance.

Now, having picked out the memory cards, I went to the camera counter because I'm interested in upgrading to a newer digital camera. Now, there was no one behind the counter and in the 15 minutes I looked at Olympus, Sony and Cannon, not once was assistance offered.

Abandoning the cameras, I went to the merchandise pick up counter where I found a female employee filling out some kind of form, talking with another employee who was in the back room and not once did she acknowledge my presence. After more than a minute, I asked if anyone there was going to assist me. Her attitude was anything but friendly.

Now at this point, my desire to be in any circuit city store, let alone this one, was about equal to being at the dentist without Novocain. Finally, after being given my purchased products, I went to the checkout register to pay for my SD memory cards, only to find that the light was on, but no one was home. The light indicating the register was open, was lit, but there was no one around the register and I had to wait for some time for a clerk to finally accept my purchase.

Now, as you can imagine, my level of satisfaction with this store was extremely low. I asked to speak to the store manager. The clerk picked up the phone, spoke to someone and asked "do you want the store manager or just any manager?"

Apparently there are many chiefs and few indians. I replied that any manager would be acceptable. After more than two minutes, she informed me that a manager was back near the customer pickup desk and that I could go over there to speak with him. I declined, left the store and this novella is the result.

I will probably not every patronize this store ever again. I’ve always had very good experiences at the store in Crestwood, but the Brentwood location is one of the worst shopping experiences I’ve ever encountered.

I will purchase from Best Buy and other competitors before doing business with Circuit City anytime soon.

The ball is in your court, I’ll be very interested in your response.

Regards,

One Unhappy Customer

Quizno's Sucks - Crap Food - Crap Service

I've been to Quizno's a few times and I've yet to get a sandwich that is even close to what they show on TV. I ordered the new Prime Rib and Peppercorn sub. They put the meat in a small plastic container and dunked it in some kind of hot liquid. I assume it was originally water, but the muddy brown look of the viscous liquid was completely unappetizing. Then, they half heartedly drained the meat before placing it on the bread. When I got back to office, I found the sandwich was runny, the bread was soggy and it was just overall, disgusting. What they show on television looks so wonderful, and what I had in my hand was a wadded up ball of soggy meat (of unknown origin) on bread that was once dry and toasted.

I tried to call to complain, but no-one answered the phone. I tried to email, but Quizno's website apparently does not have any means to contact the corporate office and instead, supposedly directs the email to the local store. I never heard back so I'm guessing the form posts to nothing in hopes that you'll just go away.

So this experience, on top of my fiancé getting sick from a Quizno's sub while we were on vacation, is enough. I'm certainly not ever eating at Quizno's again and I know my fiancé won't either. I'll be dinning at Subway and Penn Station. Quizno's can go to hell as far as I'm concerned.

Crap food and crap service. Kind of makes you wonder how they stay in business.

TealScript 3.83 SUCKS!

This version of tealscript absolutely sucks! I have spent a great deal of time "training" TS on my T|E2. I've edited the characters and retrained the problem characters. The letter "R" being the worst. After retraining over and over, as well as deleting all "R" entries and adding one from scratch, this stuipd program will not recognize an "R". It keeps wanting to enter and "A". Just take a look at these screen shots (I took these with my camera phone) and see for yourself how horrible this version of tealscript behaves.

These are two separate photos as I was working with the utility in tealscript to find out how well it was able to recognize my entries. As you can see, this software is about as useful as a sandbox in the desert. It's capped off by the lack of support by the authoring company. So much for using graffiti I. I hate graffiti II and I wish palm would give us the choice. But then again, palm is another one of those arrogant companies that does not give a rats ass about what the customer want's needs or cares. I placed the order online and mailed them a money order. In the few days it took to receive my money order, they some how ended up out of stock even though I had placed the order when they were in stock. Then they told me the could not just let me chose a different monitor, that they had to send back my check and have me place a new order and send a new money order. I could not believe how piss poor their service was. After about ten phone calls and finally getting someone who actually cared, I was able to get the issue resolved and get a princeton graphics 17" monitor instead for only a few dollars difference. (I'll tell you about the fiasco with the PG monitor later)

I thought I had the issue resolved but it took another ten or so phone calls to actually receive the monitor. Finally after about a month, I received the PG monitor and I swore I'd never buy from buy.com again. I watched with delight, as they filed bankruptcy and were bought out. I thought it served those selfish bastards right after treating customers so poorly.

Here it is five years later and I thought I'd give them another try. I ordered a Belkin KVM switch online, on 11 May, since their price was so low. It was only a $30 order and I was not in a hurry so I figured what the heck since they're under new management. What a mistake. Here it is two weeks later and the order has not even left the warehouse. What kind of crap is that? And on top of that, they don't even offer phone support any longer. At least the number is not posted on their website anymore. So I did a whois and found their phone support number, 949-389-2000. I'm just waiting until 10am to call since they don't open till 8am PST.

The moral of the story, DO NOT, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE, BUY FROM BUY.COM!!!! THEY WILL TAKE YOUR MONEY AND LEAVE YOU HANGING INDEFINITELY WITH NO RECOURSE!!!!!!

(for the se's)
buy.com telephone support = 949-389-2000
buy.com telephone number = 949-389-2000

DO NOT BUY FROM BUY.COM!

Reading is good for you

I'll admit I'm not much into reading. I don't like reading the paper, magazines, books, anything. It's not that I can't read or have difficulty, I just don't enjoy it. To me, it seems like a chore. But if I were into reading, there is a fairly new site on called Reading is Good for You. It has a lot of different books online, mostly old literature but there is a smattering of newer texts. It's not the easiest read but you can print the pages since the website has a very minimalistic interface. If you have some time and you like to read (which I don't) then you may want to check out the online books.

Foreign Languages

I just recently completed several website conversions and translations to market our company worldwide. It has been a challenge, to say the least, for a couple of them. The English to UK English translation was not too terribly difficult. Plastic caps here are still plastic caps there. But when it came time to convert the website into German and even Turkish, the challenges grew by leaps and bounds. For the german conversion, plastic caps became Runde Vinylkappen. For the Turkish folks, it became even more complicated. It turns out, the Turkish character set is different from that of the standard latin set used throughout much of the world. So, in order to make the site viewable in the correct Turkish characters, the text had to first be converted to unicode and then placed into the html. It was a long, tedious process. Thankfully the conversions are done and I don't have to worry about starting the Italian conversion until January. Happy New Year.

Personalized License Plates

I got a letter yesterday from the deparment of revenue informing me that my personalized license plates are available to be picked up at the local license office. I ended up getting my fifth choice out of six. While I'm pleased that one of my choices was available, I have no way of knowing if the first four were already taken, restricted or otherwise deemed inapropriate. It would be nice if there were some way to know why one option was granted vs. another. So I'm off to see the wizard and get my new plates; RSPNDR. This will look good on the Project Responder emergency vehicle. It seems some shlock posted about the clear plastic mailing tubes on some cheapskate website called fatwallet.com. More like fatheads.com. There was even one request for "spirit stick plastic tubes", what the hell is a spirit stick? The searches looking for "hanging packaging" made a heck of a lot more sense then spirit stick plastic tubes. Nowadays, it seems like anything you have on or growing out of your body can fixed or removed.

I couldn't imagine trying to get rid of my freckles, but I could imagine getting rid of age spots or other blemishes. It's amazing that we've come up with so many ways to make the body beautiful. For some of these 'treatments' I can easily see the benefit such as acne treatment or getting rid of pseudofolliculitis (which I am very familiar with). Some of the treatments are clearly offered purly for the vain. Laser skin peels and laser wrinkle removal is just as foriegn to me as would be a facial and cucumber wrap. Vanity treatments notwithstanding, I may just have to go and get lased myself. How nice it would be to not have to shave ever again.

Plastic tubes and brick walls

What do plastic tubes and brick walls have in common? Usually nothing, but in this case, they are inexorably intertwined. Why, you ask? Well let me tell you....

I work for a firm called Mocap that produces many products ranging from plastic caps to key tags to plastic tubes. There are several divisions in the company through which these products are marketed. My job is to build and maintain the websites for all of these divisions and worldwide locations. For the Mocap website, I've been very fortunate to be able to get the website found near the top of most search engine listings for the phrases that are most important. For the Cleartec division, it's been much harder (this is where the brick wall comes into play). For several months, I've been running into that proverbial brick wall over and over trying to get the Cleartec site to rank well for the phrase "plastic tubes" since the site logs show this as being the most active search term in finding our site. But that damn brick wall keeps getting in the way.

Well it's time to gear up, put my helmet on and face that brick wall one more time. Maybe this time I'll make a dent and get those danged plastic tubes just a little further up the list.

What the hell is 'bling' anyway?

First of all, let me say that I can't stand rap crap and anything that is remotely associated with crap that rap is. Even more, I can't stand that normal, everyday language is being so corrupted with this ebonics brain dead jargon. Now that I've made that clear, let's get on to the topic at hand.

I visit a website called Digital Point to keep tabs on the performance of several of the websites I manage, both personally and professionally. DP has a great forum and I've found a lot of good material, advice and even some stupid opinions out there. One member in particular, though, stands out. This is a guy that goes by the name of ThinkBling (hence the need for my disclaimer above). This internet raider has created a website called Bling (gawd that pains me to utter) and he actually has some interesting free software that he makes available for anyone that wants it. The one in particular I'm fascinated with is the Amazon.com application that allows a person to patch in the Amazon website into their own site with very little programming. The only problem is that's written in PHP (I'll go into my php rant later). But the concept is very impressive and I actually found an ASP version (hah, take you php freaks) and I am considering integrating the application into my Project Responder Firefighting Emergency Vehicle website to add value for the website visitors.

So even as much as I can't stand the thought of even using the word (I hate to even call it that) bling, as much as I can't stand fingernails down a chalkboard, it seems this ThinkBling character may be on to something. I'll admit that it takes a while to figure out your way around his site since it looks like text ads on steroids. But overall, I think he's figured out how to be successful on the web by giving something of value away for something that has little perceived value (a link back to a website) which in reality can be a pretty potent concoction when the links end up numbering in the thousands.

Cheers

Killing Myself

Well that's what it felt like Sunday when we pulled the 460 motor out of Project Responder. It was about 95 with 100% humidity. It may as well have been 150 degrees as hot as it felt. It took a couple of hours even after preparing all week for the chore by removing all of the accessories and connections to the engine. As hot and humid as it was, I thought I was going to pass out or have a stroke. It was an incredible amount of work, even with all of the preparation. We were very fortunate in that no major damage was done to the truck in the process. We had to remove one of the Grover Stuttertone air horns to keep it from getting disfigured by the engine hoist. The only casualty was the Federal Q-Siren which got a very, very small dent in the front of the grille, but it will be very easy to remove the grille and repair the damage.

We did have to cut the oil lines to the remote oil filter and we had to remove the line from the B&M transmission cooler. To keep the tranny fluid from fully draining, we were able to use one of Mocap's vinyl plastic caps to seal up the cooler which worked like a charm.

This was the worst case scenario and I hope I do not ever have to remove the engine from this truck again. It was not fun and I'm not looking forward to putting it back in. I am looking forward to having it done and over with. Anyone want to volunteer to do this instead?

Stargate Atlantis - Why the show is doomed!

Ok, time to get on my soapbox again. The topic today: Stargate Atlantis on the Sci-Fi channel. I saw the preview last night and I have to say, this show is doomed to failure from the start. (get ready for the bad puns)

The new show is doomed from the gitgo and will only last this season because of the dualality of StarGate and Atlantis being aired together. On it's own, Atlantis is going to sink faster than the Titanic.

The reason SG is so popular is because it's rooted in reality. Things that we can easily identify with. It's the Air Force, Wyoming and Earth. People who do not consider themselves sci-fi fans in general can still find a great deal of enjoyment and believability in SG1.

Atlantis, from the preview last night, looks like another failed show, Star Trek's Deep Space Nine. It's a city out in space somewhere with aliens that look like a cross between Klingons and Cardassians. The set even looks like something out of the Star Trek franchise. There does not seem to be any originality other than the city that floats.

And what's with the new gate design? Again, there is very little carry over from SG to Atlantis. The new gate design looks sci-fi. The original gate looks very Egyptian and believable.

I predict that Atlantis will float this year but will sink like a rock next season when SG is not around to keep it afloat. (bad puns intended)

If I were a betting man, and Vegas were laying odds, I'll wager a bundle on that.

Are everybody's fingers broken?

Ok, time to get on the soapbox. Does anyone out there know about the little lever on the side of the steering wheel that makes the little green lights on your car's dashboard blink? I'm begining to think that either everyone's fingers are broken and they simply are unable to operate the lever or vehicle manufacturers have stopped wasting money on a device that's no longer used. I'm talking about turn signals! Maybe signaling a turn has become extinct or is no longer socially acceptable. Whatever the reason, it seems that use of this very simple device is the exception rather than the rule. I've lost count how many times some idiot stops in the road, seemingly for no reason, then makes a turn. Even worse, are the drivers that think, "oh, it's time to turn" and turn on thier signal just as they're turning the wheels. I think by now I've figured out what your doing stupid!

Is it just me? I'm I out in left field or maybe some bizaro world? Or is everyone so self absorbed that they just don't care about driving safely and being aware that there are other drivers who just might like to know that your turning right ten feet ahead? I don't know. But I sure do wish I had a set of air horns to blast the idots out of my way. Of course, in a perfect world, I'd just drive a buldozer to work and it wouldn't really matter. No, scratch that, in a perfect world, I'd be able to hire someone else to do the driving, "home Jeves".

Will anyone ever see this?

That's a good question. I have to wonder how many people will find these ramblings. How does anyone's blog get found? Do you have to go out and shout it from the rooftops? Or do they just come if you build it? Heck for that matter, how do the search engines even know this blog exists if no one has seen it, let alone link to it? It's kind of like asking if a tree makes any noise when it falls in the woods if no-one is there to hear it.

I could probably post the winning lottery numbers (before they're picked), the secret recipe for Coke and the location of Atlantis here in this blog and they'll be safe forever. Of course if I had access to any of these, I wouldn't be wasting my time banging on a keyboard to fill up some empty electrons. Now, on the other hand, I've read some other blogs and the pages seem to go on forever. The converse may be true in such a case because the text is so long and so obfuscated, that a juicy little jem could be lost forever.

This, then, leaves the big question left to be answered; what is there to write about? I've already mentioned the Ford truck I've been working on for the last several years. I've already mentioned the vinyl caps company I work for. What else is there? I guess I could ramble on about the weather (which is simply amazing today), politics (voting libertarian) or religion (don't really have one). I'm not really sure. I'll have to get back to you on that one. In the meantime, I'm going to enjoy the weekend and maybe even go out and try to get Project Responder finished.

Making a living

It's been almost a year since I started working at Mocap. It's hard to believe how fast time flies by. Before Mocap, I never really ever gave any thought to something as simple as the vinyl caps this company produces. I asked the question when I first started, "who uses these?" and the answer was "who doesn't use them?" I've since come to find out that these dip molded items are used in a huge variety of industries from automotive to industrial to household goods. Mocap is probably like a great many other manufacturers in that the products they produce are normally used behind the scenes and end up being used in or on other products we may never see directly. Such as in the example of the automotive industry, these caps are used to protect the fittings on air conditioning components during manufacturing and shipping. They are removed when the component is installed and the car buyer will never have known it was once there. Kind of like an invisible product.

So my first year is almost over and I'm still here. That's a pretty big accomplishment considering how bored I usually end up at most companies I've worked for in the past. It's usually a lack of a challege or just being under-utilized. At Mocap, I'm in the driver's seat and always have something meaningful to keep me busy and the people here are fantastic, well mostly fantastic anyway :) So here's to another year at Mocap.

Just the begining...

It's been three long years working on a frame-off restoration of a 1987 Ford F250 into the Ultimate Volunteer Firefighter's Emergency Response Vehicle. The truck is nearly complete and will soon be ready to travel to various 4x4 and firefighting shows around the US including SEMA in the fall. The truck has over a hundred sponsors and I'm sure many of them are anxious to see the truck completed and out in the public.

The big hurdle right now is the engine. The truck has a 460 motor and it seems to be getting too much fuel. The problem seems to be the carburetor. Holley is helping us out by providing us with a new Truck Avenger Carburetor, a 770cfm model which we'll be bolting on this weekend. Hopefully this will resolve the running problems and then all that's left is a lot of detail work and getting the vinyl graphics installed.

After all the work is done and dust settles, the last major obsticle is finding insurance. It seems that the truck is so unique that almost no insurance company want's to offer coverage. The one or two firms that will, want an arm and a leg it seems. We're still looking and hope to find something soon. No matter what, the truck has to be done and ready to roll for the 7th Annual Chicagoland Emergency Vehicle Show in Chicago on August 7th.
